We have a Family!

July 14 - They've arrived! We welcome Peyman & Mehrnoush to the neighbourhood.

May 15 - We received news that an Iranian couple currently taking refuge in Turkey will be "our" family. We expect their arrival in 4-8 weeks as they are currrently not yet "travel ready".

Apr 24 - At a special Vestry on April 24, 2016,  the parish voted to remove the "Middle East" part of the Vestry motion passed in November, 2015. We did this because AURA had informed us that the odds of getting a family from the Middle East were slim to none. Once the Canadian government hit their target of 25,000 Syrian refugees, they "turned off the taps" in the Middle East and re-started the process of processing refugees from other parts of the world.  This change in the Vestry motion has moved us from the bottom of AURA's list to somewhere near the top. We look forward to receiving a family from somewhere in the world in the near future and leave it in God's capable hands as to who that family will be.

How to help?

At a special Vestry late last year in 2015, the Parish voted to sponsor a refugee family from the Middle East. Since then, your Refugee Organizing Committee has been hard at work planning for the arrival of the family. Our application has been submitted to AURA (Anglican United Refugee Alliance) who is the sponsorship agency that all Anglican (and United) churches in the Diocese must use when sponsoring a refugee family. The Parish's response to our fundraising request has been heartwarming, with over $30,000 of the $35,000 target already donated or pledged.

For people wishing to make a tax-receipted charitable donation, cheques can be made out "Christ Church St. James" and marked with "Refugee Fund" in the memo line (and mailed or dropped off at the church).

To e-mail funds, please send an e-mail to admin@christchurchstjames.ca with your name and address and amount you will be sending (so that we can receipt you properly) and the password to be used to receive the funds when the e-mail notification from your bank arrives.

Many thanks from your Refugee Organizing Committee: Stephanie Hutcheson, Sandra Fawcett, Carol-Anne Foty, Marabelle McTavish, Sharon Laird, Jane-Anne Murray, John Lemon and Pete Pynenburg
